Daneway Portal was rebuilt almost to its original glory in 1996,
here photographed immediately after its re-opening on the 21st September.
This end of the tunnel suffered from distorted brickwork during its working life due at least partly to the seasonal changes in the surrounding soil which alternately dried and then became saturated with water during the winter months. After the canal's abandonment in the early 1920's, the tunnel was allowed to decay and eventually suffered collapses near this end. (next picture) |
